Riskbreaker’s Gambit began as an idea I had while playing other tabletop skirmish wargames, that all of them scratched a sort of itch I’d had since I was a child, but none of them quite met my expectations, though at the time I didn’t quite understand what those were.

I originally sat down to tinker with the concept that would eventually become Riskbreaker’s Gambit, inspired by the SRPGs of my youth (and their more recent remasters and re-releases), in addition to the many mods and fan works that came from others’ passion for the genre.

Over time the game evolved to become what it is now, one that meets my specific interests and, I hope, will be fun and engaging for anyone else willing to give it a try!

My main goal throughout the design and creation of Riskbreaker’s Gambit has been to make a game that is simple enough for a novice to grasp quickly while being deep enough to engage a TTRPG veteran longer than the few games it would take to get a grip on the rules.

Riskbreaker’s Gambit uses a 1inch/25mm square grid laid out with various terrain elements to allow for elevation and strategic movement to inform the game. Where your units are as well as their facing is crucial to coming up victorious in any scenario!

While there are scenarios present within Riskbreaker’s Gambit where the goal is to kill all opponents, there are also objectives to be completed by each Tactician, as well as scenarios with altogether different objectives than the base “kill ’em all” method.

Riskbreaker’s Gambit is “miniatures agnostic”, which means that you can use any miniatures of any scale to play the game. I recommend trying to keep things within a scale that fits on a 25mm base (though one could argue for 40mm bases, though this will require a larger play surface. Conversely, you could go smaller, sacrificing miniature detail for the benefit of more convenient play). If you do change the scale of your bases, I’d recommend changing the scale of your grid, but other than that the sky’s the limit!

Paper standees, meeples with Sharpie faces, artfully painted miniatures from other game titles? All I really care about is that you have fun playing my game! (Though I’d absolutely adore it if those of you playing showed off your units and boards; I love seeing that stuff!)
