Mages are spellcasters who wield powerful, nuanced magic. They often use their abilities to control the battlefield; casting destructive spells, creating impenetrable barriers and more.
Mages are usually found at the back of an enemy formation, where they can safely unleash their potent magical attacks without direct confrontation.
Mages tend to fall into the species of Cultists, Elementals, Eye Horrors, Gremlins and Skeletons.
Cultists are sinister monsters wielding powers beyond mortal comprehension. Clad in hooded robes and adorned with esoteric symbols, cultists act and plan with unholy fervor. They seek to usher in an age of darkness where their dark patrons reign supreme.
In battle they chant incantations in ancient tongues, summoning forth eldritch horrors and unleashing torrents of dark energy to consume their enemies. They operate in secret, manipulating events from the shadows to further their sinister agendas. Cunning and manipulative, they prey upon the fears and vulnerabilities of others to achieve their goals.
Cultists employ dark rituals and sacrifices to appease their masters, willing to sacrifice everything in their quest for power. They are fanatical zealots, willing to lay down their lives in service to their masters.
Elementals are powerful manifestations of the elements inherent in many parts of the world. These beings are composed entirely of their respective aspects, taking on forms that reflect that. Fire elementals, for example, are living flames that crackle and dance with intensity, while ice elementals are composed of shimmering, frost-covered crystals that exude an aura of cold.
These elementals generally act according to the will of the forces that caused their birth. They are often summoned or controlled by powerful mages, but can also spontaneously rise where the balance of the aspects is heavily weighted in one direction.
When left to their own devices elementals roam freely, utilizing their abilities to follow whatever whim takes them until they burn out and disperse.
Eye horrors are grotesque and unnerving creatures characterized by their biology’s focus on eyes. Eye horrors come in various forms, some with smallish wings or a muscular central tail for support, some with a multitude of eyestalks. They all share the common features of a horrid maw of fangs and a huge central eyeball.
Eye horrors can unleash devastating eye beams that sear through armour and flesh with scorching potency. Some may possess abilities that allow them to entangle weaker wills or project strange curses.
They often dominate weaker willed creatures and force them into servitude, toying with them like a petulant child. While a stronger creature may briefly force an alliance, an intelligent mind is always aware that the eye horror will take the earliest opportunity for vengeance.
Gremlins are imp-like humanoids with bat-like wings sprouting from their backs and pointed tails that give them a devilish appearance, reminiscent of creatures from storybooks and legends. Gremlins prefer attacking with magical shots from their bows, which are said to be taken from fallen fae and twisted to the gremlins’ foul ends.
Living in the darker corners of the world, gremlins are drawn to places of discord. They thrive in environments where they can sow mischief and watch the ensuing turmoil.
Despite their small stature, their cunning and malevolent nature make them a significant threat. Gremlins often work in small groups, coordinating their attacks to maximize the disruption they cause.
The animated remains of mortals, now bound by malevolent magic and twisted into nightmares that haunt the minds of their former friends. On chill nights when the air itself seems still out of trepidation, the hollow clatter and shuffle of these horrid creatures can be made out even as the glowing motes that make up their eyes come into view.
Ruthless and unflinching, skeletons wield more magic now than they ever did in life, seemingly plucking spells from the air to hurl upon their foes. They exist as a mockery of life, driven by an insatiable thirst for the essence of mortal lives.
In battle, skeletons unleash a barrage of magical attacks to overwhelm their foes. Typically protected by hardier creatures, a skeleton is nonetheless a durable and capable foe on its own and shouldn’t be underestimated, lest one join their ranks.
